Membership Policy

BWRC Open-Source Policy:

The mission of the UC Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC) is to educate world-class researchers while exploring the leading edge of wireless technology.

It is the objective of all BWRC researchers that any software and hardware developed within the BWRC program will be released under an open-source license, and to place all such research results in the public domain making them openly accessible.

Center membership provides access to faculty and graduate students involved in a large interdisciplinary research effort which seeks to build circuits and systems for ubiquitous connectivity enabling the platforms of the future. Members support the BWRC by making available an annual unrestricted fund of $200K for the use of the directors in support of the research. These funds support academic and educational research work and associated costs of the Directors. Unrestricted funding eliminates contracts and maximizes member research investment.

Benefits of participating in the BWRC Sponsorship Program are as follows:

  • Facilitation of introductions to Center faculty and graduate students so that Sponsors can advise on ongoing projects. See http://bwrc.eecs.berkeley.edu/research
  • Invitations to learn about research projects at BWRC.
  • Sponsors will have unrestricted access to all the research results of BWRC research projects pursuant to UC Berkeley’s open-source licensing policies.
  • Opportunity for sponsors to visit BWRC and engage with the research teams.
  • Engagement with students for internships and full-time employment
  • Invitation to attend the BWRC semi-annual research retreats.
  • Access to new publications including new journal papers, conference presentations, retreat, presentations, thesis and seminar webcasts.
  • On-site faculty briefings.
  • A seat on the BWRC Board of Advisors.

The following benefits must be documented through sponsored research, a business contract, or a separate gift agreement:

  • Opportunity for members to directly fund research with PIs.
  • Longer term engagements with research teams are possible through the UC Visiting
  • Scholar and Visiting Researcher programs.
  • Members can engage with BWRC faculty to select a project of mutual interest for an additional gift of $90k per graduate student.
